Transport
is responsible for over a quarter of our CO2
emissions, and rising. We all need to travel,
but we can reduce our impact on the planet and
improve our local community through some simple
choices.
•
We can walk or cycle for local journeys. This
cuts down on the CO2 emissions of your car
and keeps you fit too!
•
Most of us could use local/ farm shops more
often and out of town supermarkets less.
•
Make use of public transport and park and
ride schemes – this not only cuts down
on CO2 emissions but is often more pleasant
than sitting in a traffic jam!
•
Take more holidays in the UK rather than flying
abroad – our country has much to offer
and holidaying in the UK saves on average
700kg of CO2 emissions per person!
Size
isn’t important...
Larger
cars use more fuel and emit more CO2 than smaller
ones. When choosing a car, ask yourself if a
large vehicle is really necessary. Remember
to enquire about fuel economy. Cars can now
also be compared in terms of CO2 emissions per
mile.
If you already own an inefficient vehicle, can
you find ways of using it less?
•
On average, a two litre car, costs £6800
per year to run.
•
There are now 5 park and ride sites in Guildford,
so it is no longer always necessary to drive
right into the centre of town. More
•
Car sharing to work, school or the shops will
not only help the planet, but save you money
too. More
•
New cycle routes are being provided all the
time. Try one out near you! More
•
If you can’t face pedalling, how about
an electric bike? More
Public
transport needn’t be a chore. There are
many great places you can visit for a day out
by train or bus from Guildford.
